Bhitarkanika is India’s second-largest mangrove environment, following the Sunderbans. Bhitarkanika National Park is mainly a network of streams and canals that are inundated with water from the rivers Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Patasala, creating a unique ecology. Bhitarkanika is home to the greatest population of the endangered Salt Water Crocodile in the country. The Salt Water Crocodile is the region’s apex predator; nevertheless, the park is also home to a variety of reptiles, including the water monitor lizard and pythons. Bhitarkanika is also home to a variety of species, including deer, hyenas, and wild boar, as well as migrating birds that visit throughout the winter season, adding color to the ecosystem.
Another uncommon phenomenon is the Bagagahana, or heronry, near Surajpore Creek. Thousands of birds congregate along the creek to nest, and the aerial acrobatics done prior to mating are stunning. Bhitarkanika also has eight different varieties of Kingfisher birds, which is a rarity. The Maharaja’s former hunting porch contributes to its heritage significance.
