By Air

The nearest airport to Bhitarkanika National Park is Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) in Bhubaneswar, located approximately 158 km away, or a 4-hour drive. From here, you can hire a taxi or bus, easily available outside the airport, to reach the park.

By Rail

If you are planning your holiday in Bhitarkanika, Bhadrak Railway Station is the closest to the park, located approximately 85 km away. Situated on the Kolkata-Chennai main line, it connects major junctions of the country. After reaching Bhadrak, you can take a bus or taxi to reach Chandbali, a river port and then take a boat directly to the park. It is a more affordable option to reach Bhitarkanika as compared to taking a flight.

By Road

If you love road trips, then you can easily reach the national park from the two main entry points - Khola and Gupti. Buses and taxis are easily available from major cities like Bhadrak (84 km), Bhubaneswar (153.9 km) and Cuttack (131.9 km).

History and Importance: The Legacy of Bhitarkanika National Park

Established on September 16, 1998, and designated as a Ramsar site on August 19, 2002,  Bhitarkanika National Park spans a 145 sq km area in the Kendrapara district of Odisha. It is the second largest mangrove ecosystem in India, nourished by the Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Pathsala rivers. 

Historically, Bhitarkanika was the hunting ground for the erstwhile King of Kanika. The park still holds remnants of the past, including ancient hunting towers that add to its historical significance.
